TIPLOC

Also: timing point location, location code

The timetable’s name for a place: up to seven letters, like PADTON for Paddington.

Example

TIPLOCs

PADTON
London Paddington
RDNGSTN
Reading

Timetables are written in TIPLOCs. Every station, junction, depot and siding a train can be timed at has one, up to seven characters long.

They’re squashed versions of the place’s name, which makes some of them a fun puzzle: RDNGSTN is Reading station.
