Two journeys are on the same train when it’s the same run and your rides overlap.

Trainiac knows exactly which train run each journey is: its train UID and the day it ran. Two people are on the same train when they logged the same run and their rides overlap in time. Someone who got on after you got off doesn’t count.
Friends are named. So is anyone who joined your journey through a link you shared, or whose link you joined. Everyone else only ever appears as a number, never a name or a seat.
