Junction

Also: jn, jct

Where railway lines meet or split.

At a junction, points (moving rails) send a train one way or another. Which way it goes there is a big part of its route, which is why junctions are often timing points.

Plenty of junctions are named after a nearby station, and in the data they get their own TIPLOC.
