Where each line usually runs. Late in the evening only some of them do.

BART opened in 1972. Its trains run under San Francisco, through a tube on the floor of the bay, and out through Oakland and Berkeley to the suburbs beyond. Its lines are named by colour.

It’s a railway of its own making. The rails are 5 feet 6 inches apart, wider than nearly every other railway in America, and the trains take their power from a third rail beside the track.

BART doesn’t give its trains a number you’d ever see: a train is known by its line and where it’s going. So a BART journey in Trainiac has no train number, and that’s not something missing.

BART meets Caltrain at Millbrae, where you can change from one to the other.

In Trainiac

A BART journey shows the logo alone, with no number beside it.
