You don’t ask the live feeds “anything new?” over and over. You connect to a message broker, subscribe to a topic, and it pushes each message to you the moment it’s published. STOMP is the simple text protocol that conversation uses.
The connection has to stay alive, so both sides send small heartbeats while it’s quiet.
