Network Rail owns and runs the track and signals. The trains are run by operators, like Great Western Railway, LNER or Northern. A passenger operator is often called a TOC, a train operating company.
In the data, each operator is a two-letter code, sometimes called its ATOC code. Some are easy to guess, others aren’t.
