Every kind of train in Britain has a class number. Trains of the same class are built to the same design, so they look the same inside and go as fast as each other.
Each unit has its own number too, starting with its class: unit 800001 was the first Class 800.
Some classes run for one operator, others for several. Avanti West Coast runs the Class 390 Pendolinos, while Class 800s run for both Great Western Railway and LNER.
